The most critical issue facing us all is that we are afraid to die. Some, in fact, won’t even acknowledge it beyond nervous joking. That it is taboo in this society leaves people given a terminal diagnosis feeling utterly shocked and alone. And, true, death is a mystery for everyone. But unspoken feelings, family issues, and uncomfortable religious beliefs can, in fact, be addressed and ameliorated. Even beyond that, a dying person can be encouraged to “live more fully while dying,” finding a depth in themselves and their relationships that is better than ever. And people do find that this can lead to a calm and peaceful death.
